One of my favorite aspects of living in a new city and state is learning about some of the wonderful local products that Ohio has to offer. Today we’re talking about Bourbon.
When Watershed Distillery out of Columbus reached out, I was more than excited to learn about Ohio-made spirits, Bourbon in particular. I don’t know a ton about Bourbon, but I can’t say I disagree with most people who think of Kentucky when they think of the liquor.
Little did I know Bourbon is much more than a brown liquor coming out of Kentucky, it’s a true American spirit. Watershed’s bourbon is made from wheat, rye, barley, and spelt and double-distilled after aging in charred American oak barrels. They age the bourbon for up to 3.5 years before it hits your glass and the passion and hard work from the Watershed team shines through every sip.
In an effort to enjoy the delicious bourbon with even more local and seasonal Ohio products, I paired the spirit with warm chai-spice infused apple cider I picked up at a local apple orchard. In just 20 minutes local apple cider it taken to the next level with warm chai spices to create the most cozy fall drink perfect for your fall or winter night.
Be sure to see my note in the recipe below to multiply the recipe and make Spiked Chai Cider for a crowd. I think it would go great with fresh fall rolls for a party or to follow up a meal of spaghetti squash with turkey meatballs.
Cheers to drinking (and eating) local!
- 1 c apple cider
- ½ c water
- 1 T whole chai spices
- 3 oz. (2 shots) of Watershed Distillery Bourbon
- In a small sauce pan, add the apple cider, water, and chai spices. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the spice to seep for 10 minutes. Strain the chai spices through a fine mesh sieve.
- Add ¾ c of the chai-spiced cider to each glass or mug, pour in 1.5 oz (one shot glass) of bourbon to each drink and stir. Serve immediately with apple slices to garnish.
This looks delicious! Seems like the perfect drink to keep the (adult) neighbors warm during trick or treating!
That is a very, very good point!
This sounds delicious and I need it in my life!! Love bourbon and chai
Thanks, Brittny. Any excuse for chai…and a little spike 🙂
